I’ve come to love the Caribbean Coast.
Who wouldn’t? you say… But before you think that I spent all of my time at the ocean, I have to say that when I refer to “the coast,” it has a much greater meaning to me than just the beach (where we did get to visit a couple of times!).
Here in Colombia “Costeño” (=coastal) has certain connotations. Their accent, their way of life, and their way of socializing is known throughout the country. Even though Monteria isn’t right on the coast, the culture and language differences are notable from the interior regions of Colombia. I have come to love the costeño culture. My 8 months in Monteria marked changes that won’t be reversed.
One thing that I learned to love (as my Spanish developed) was the Costeño humor. One classic way of making jokes is by using similes. I felt like a master one day when some friends were talking about how tiring the little dog was that was running around the house. “She’s more tiring than a pineapple under your arm!” I said, to the great surprise and delight of my guests. Everyone laughed and commented on how “costeña¨ I was becoming.
My favorite, though, that the people closest to me would understand… Last night we were on our way home and crossed a gravel road that was full of potholes and water.
Then it came… my Costeño humor… This street has more lakes than Minnesota!
I already miss the coast and I know that I will find great joy in returning someday…
