I remember as a child doing a project with sun dials. We made our own sun dials with plywood and nails, marked the times, and set them in the field to see how they worked throughout the day. Shadows shift and change constantly.
Our God is not like a shifting shadow. Instead, He is the source of light: “Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of heavenly lights, who does not change like the shifting shadows” (James 1:17).
When we chase gifts out of season, it’s like chasing shadows. We look for relationships, resources, and fulfillment outside of God’s perfect plan. We can trust that in His time, He will provide EVERY good thing we need as a gift from His hand – no chasing necessary. “The Lord will indeed give what is good,” David reminds us in Psalm 85:12. We can rest assured that all good things will come in His time.
A couple of my friends demonstrated the futility of shadow-chasing for me the other night (and inspired this post)…
