I’ve taken a pretty long blogging break the past months, but I’m ready to jump back in and share with you the things that God stirs in my heart. Thanks for your prayers as I head to the Twin Cities today and back to Colombia tomorrow. If you didn’t receive my monthly update yesterday, leave a comment here so I can be sure and get you on that list as well!
The book of John has to be my current favorite. I’m reading through it for the second time, chewing on the depth and richness of the teaching and character of Jesus. What an amazing Person! I’ve been looking closely at His relationship with the Father, which He talks about over and over again in that gospel.
I’m sure I’ll be writing more about it in the future, but I wanted to highlight Jesus’ response to serving.
John 13 talks about one of the last moment Jesus shared with His disciples. The first verse says that “He now showed them the full extent of His love.” He served them. He demonstrated how they were to serve each other. What could cause Jesus, the King of Glory, to lower Himself to that extent? What could motivate Him to be so willing to wash the feet of these unworthy men?
“Jesus knew that the Father had put all things under His power, and that He had come from God and was returning to God; SO…” (John 13:3). So He served. So He got up from the meal. So He took the position of a servant. What factors enabled Him to do this?
1. Jesus recognized His position in the Kingdom. He was secure in His authority, allowing Him to lay it aside to serve.
2. Jesus understood that His time on earth was temporary. He knew this wasn’t the end. He was an ambassador of Heaven.
What would happen if we could truly understand these two principles? Serving becomes a joy when we understand our position in the Kingdom. We are raised up and seated with Christ. That position is secure. We are eternal beings, and we are on our way to spend eternity with the One who served as an example for us, and our time on earth is short.
May these be motivating factors for me to lay down my pride, get up from the meal, and serve.
