Philippians 1:19 – “For I know that this will turn out for my deliverance through your prayer and the supply of the Spirit of Jesus Christ.”
Prayer is a vital part of the advancement of the Gospel in the nations. Paul, one of the earliest gospel workers, is writing a heartfelt letter to the Philippians, the church that supported him and sent him in way that was distinct from every other church. It’s clear throughout the book that he has a very special affection for them, and they have responded with three things every gospel worker needs: prayer, relationship, and financial support.
The context of Philippians 1:19 is the challenges Paul is facing as he is imprisoned for the sake of the Gospel. He has a great confidence (“I know,” he says) that God will turn his circumstances around and use them for the advancement of the Gospel. However, he counts his supporters as an important part of this process.
He could have just repeated what he said in Romans 8:28 – “All things will work together for good…” But Paul wanted to remind his sending team of how important their prayers are. He didn’t just say that the supply that comes from the Holy Spirit is enough. He said that God’s deliverance would come through their prayers.
Just like Paul, I recognize the huge importance of the sending, supporting church – in relationship, in prayers, and in finances. In regard to prayer, I am so blessed to have people that are consistently praying for me. Will you be one of these people? Will you be a part of the process that God works out challenges for my good and for the advancement of the Gospel?
“You have been my partners in spreading the Good News about Christ from the time you first heard it until now.” (Phil 1:5)
